AI visibility is more than a brand mention
AI visibility describes how a brand or source appears in AI-generated answers. Useful measurement distinguishes a mention from a linked citation and a simulation from an observed result.
Visibility, mention, and citation
A brand can be visible without receiving a link. A mention records that the brand name appeared. A citation records that a source URL was attributed in the answer. These signals should not be collapsed into one number without explanation.
Why engine context matters
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot are separate products with changing retrieval and presentation behavior. A result observed on one surface at one time should not be generalized to every engine.
A defensible visibility record
- The exact prompt or query that was tested.
- The engine or answer surface and observation time.
- Whether the brand was mentioned and whether a URL was cited.
- The cited URL or domain when one was present.
- A provenance label identifying observed, heuristic, simulated, or experimental data.
